TURKEY STEPS IN: VINKARA WINERY
Scientific studies have proven that some of the earliest winemaking began in modern day Turkey some 15,000 years ago. Taking on that wine heritage is Vinkara Winery, from Kalecik in north-central Turkey, within the ancient region of Anatolia. Best known for their Kalecik Karasi, a red grape originating from and named after the small, humble village of Kalecik, home to Vinkara’s winery and vineyards — Vinkara is a leader in the production of indigenous Anatolian grape varietals. In addition to Kalecik Karasi, Vinkara produces red wines from the native Öküzgözü and Boğazkere grapes, and a white wine from the native Narince grape. Vinkara’s vineyards are planted at 2,000 feet above sea level spanning the rocky hills and plateaus. Due to its location, the vineyards are naturally influenced by a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Aside from the climate’s impact, the soil, comprised of sand, clay, and limestone with high mineral content contributes to successful vine growth. Grapes are all hand-picked then sorted and fermented separately. Vinkara Wines strike attention to the indigenous Anatolian grapes and how the surrounding natural environment enhances the taste. Sip on some ancient varietals from a historical winemaking region.
